MEASURE AND CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE – A KEY TO STAYING HEALTHY AND PREVENTING STROKE
Hypertension is one of the most dangerous "silent killers," affecting more than 1.3 billion people worldwide. However, nearly half of those people are unaware they have it.

The condition presents in various ways and often shows no symptoms, silently damaging vital organs such as the heart, eyes, brain, kidneys, and peripheral arteries. Additionally, many patients mistakenly believe that elevated blood pressure with age is harmless and does not require early treatment. Many only seek medical attention when severe complications have already occurred.
In recognition of World Hypertension Day, the World Hypertension League (WHL), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), continues to emphasize the message: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.” This global call to action encourages everyone to actively monitor and manage their blood pressure and understand the serious risks of hypertension—ultimately prompting healthy lifestyle changes for prevention.
Dr. Pham Thu Thuy, Level II Specialist – Department of Clinical and Interventional Cardiology, ƽ, shares:
“Proper home blood pressure monitoring is a simple yet powerful way to track cardiovascular health. Early detection and effective management of hypertension not only prevent complications but also help maintain long-term quality of life.”
To prevent and manage hypertension effectively, start with small but impactful changes:
- Increase physical activity; exercise regularly based on your fitness level
- Manage weight, especially if you're overweight or obese
- Quit smoking; limit alcohol and stimulants
- Eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy; reduce saturated and total fats
- Cut down on salt—ideally <1500mg of sodium/day (~3.75g table salt), or reduce by at least 1000mg/day
- Boost potassium intake through diet (unless contraindicated due to chronic kidney disease or specific medications)
- Get regular health check-ups to detect and manage related conditions early
